“You shouldn’t be doing this,” Justin mumbled in flustered agitation.

“I sent everyone else home with your brothers. So, there is no one else,” Amora answered as she changed the linens on the bed and his nightshirt.

“Amora. Please. It isn’t proper for you to see me like this,” Justin protested when she began to bathe his legs. He’d managed to do his torso without her help, but her gentle touch sent scorching bolts of fire into his gut, and . . .

“Amora. Stop!”

The disconcerted girl recoiled, the roses in her cheeks growing brighter. Moisture gathered behind her eyes, and the flustered nurse rose to leave.

“Wait. I am not upset with you,” Justin rushed to say. “It’s just that . . . it tickles,” he prevaricated. Justin certainly couldn’t explain the truth of the difficulty. But the fact that delicious sensations were transmitting themselves was news.

Confusion colored her delicate face, and she questioned, “It tickles?”

“Yes! YES! I can feel your touch.”

Leaping to her feet, Amora shouted, “Oh!” Then she covered her mouth, but her eyes went wide. With a forefinger, she drew a line up the bottom of one of Justin’s feet, just as she’d seen Dr. Hamilton do. Justin’s foot twitched slightly, but nothing registered on his haggard face.

Moving aside the borrowed basin, she softly traced a pattern up his calf to Justin’s knee without response. But just above that point, he started to squirm.

“What are you doing?” he squeaked, his voice taking on the strange, crackling falsetto of adolescence.

“You can feel me,” she whispered in reverent awe. “Do you know what this means?”

Turning scarlet, Justin adamantly shook his head and refused to answer. At least not verbally. His body’s response betrayed him, but he would admit nothing!

“God is answering our prayers, cariño. You will see. You will see!”
